A very well-known and valuable timber, mahogany is regarded as the world’s finest timber for high-class furniture and cabinet work. The tree has been heavily exploited within its native range, becoming virtually extinct in some areas, with populations everywhere in steep decline It is now cultivated in plantations in many parts of the tropics 

PRODUCT: Timber: The high value attached to S. macrophylla wood in the international markets is well known. The heartwood is red-brown in appearance. The density of the wood of plantation-grown trees is often somewhat less than that of trees from the forest in the natural area of distribution and weighs 485-840 kg/m3 at 12% mc. The wood has been used in interior panelling, joinery work, turnery, furniture, plywood and heavy construction work. Reclamation: S. macrophylla has been used in reforestation projects and has proved to be suitable in areas not protected from grazing. S.macrophylla  is used to treat Diabetes mellitus, the bark of the plant is Astringent, Febrifuge and bitte. Acacia mangium is an evergreen fast-growing tropical hardwood tree, which can grow up to 30 m tall and 50 cm thick, under favorable conditions.

AcaciaFood: The germinating seeds can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable. Fuel: With a calorific value of 4 800-4 900 kcal/kg, A. mangium provides good quality charcoal and is suitable for the manufacture of charcoal briquettes and artificial carbon.Fibre: The pulp is readily bleached to high brightness levels and is excellent for papermaking.

 

The neutral sulphite semi-chemical pulping of A. mangium gives yields of 61-75%. It is currently grown primarily for pulp and paper in Sabah, Sumatra and Vietnam. Wood also makes excellent particleboard.Timber: A. mangium is an important source of wattle timber; the wood is used for construction, boat building, furniture and cabinet making, and veneer. It makes attractive furniture and cabinets, mouldings, and door and window components. Conversion into veneer and plywood is feasible with no specific processing requirements. It is unsuitable for timber because it contains knots and flutes, has a high incidence of rot and is subject to termite attack. Its density is (min. 450) 530-690 kg/cubic m at 15% mc.

 

Tannin or dyestuff: It has high tannin content (18-39%), justifying commercial exploitation of tannins.Other products: A. mangium sawdust provides a good quality substrate for the lucrative production of shiitake mushrooms.Erosion control: A. mangium is employed in soil conservation.Shade or shelter: With its dense foliage, retained throughout the year, A. mangium makes a useful shade tree, screening and soil cover crop. It has been used experimentally to shade cocoa.

 

It can also be planted as a wind or firebreak.Nitrogen fixation: A. mangium trees form a symbiosis with soil bacteria of the genus Rhizobium, leading to root nodules, in which the bacteria transform free nitrogen into organic and inorganic compounds containing nitrogen.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

Pinus caribaea

Pinus caribaea is a fast-growing evergreen, coniferous tree that can reach a height of up to 45 metres. The bole is generally straight and well formed, with a diameter of 50 - 80cm and occasionally up to 1 metre.The lower branches are large, horizontal and drooping; the upper branches often ascending to form an open, rounded to pyramidal crown, whilst young trees have a dense, pyramidal crown. Plantation-grown trees can be free of branches for up to 21 metres

"Pinus caribaea is used for a wide range of purposes, including construction, light flooring, joinery, inexpensive furniture, boxes, pallets, turnery, toys and, after treatment with preservatives, poles, posts, railway sleepers and mine props. The wood is also suitable for interior trim, veneer, plywood, piles, vats, particle board and fibre board. The wood is also used for the manufacture of paper.
Pinus caribaea is planted in windbreaks and as an ornamental and shade tree.

Eucalyptus pellita

Up to 55 m tall. 
"Eucalyptus pellita is one of the most popular plantation tropical tree species. It has all of the requirements for a commercially successful timber tree, including rapid growth under plantationpelita conditions, straight stems with limited branching and decent wood quality for particular uses and products. Plantation species should also be tolerant of a variety of soils and location conditions, and be resistant to common pests and diseases,Eucalyptus pellita is a medium sized to tall, fast growing hardwoods, evergreen tree, 20-40 m in height, with a diameter at breast height of up to 2m. At its best it has a straight trunk to about 1/2 of the tree height and a large heavily branched crown.
Growing Period: Perennial, can reach a height of 13-15m in 3.5years, and can be grown on 4-8 years coppice rotations."

The heartwood is red to dark red.strong and durable, moderately heavy with a density of 990kg/cubic m. The timber is similar to that of red mahogany In addition to its use as a firewood, the wood can also be worked to produce fine furniture. The flowers are also suitable for honey bees. popular as a source tree for the pulp and paper industry. The wood is a good source of charcoal and pole.
